Autism and ADHD: "diseases" of modern times?

About autism and ADHD

Neither autism nor ADHD are diseases. A disease is characterized by a temporary condition, with a defined cause, treatable with medications or procedures capable of eliminating the symptoms. However, this does not apply to both conditions, where the symptoms are nonspecific, usually related to mental health, leading to impairment of daily activities.

In the field of neurodevelopmental disorders, autism (Autism Spectrum Disorder - ASD) and ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) are two conditions that have given rise to much discussion and, at the same time, confusion.

In some cases, autism and ADHD can coexist in the same individual, which is known as comorbidity. This overlap can further complicate diagnosis and treatment, as symptoms may overlap or mask each other.

In the last decade, an increasing number of children and adults have been diagnosed with ASD and ADHD, and conventional treatments for these disorders usually involve a combination of behavioral therapy and medications. While these medications can be effective for many individuals, they can also have side effects and limitations. They are sometimes unnecessary or excessive, due to poor or hasty diagnoses, leading to the risk of creating dependency and, at times, causing more harm than good, as explained by Brazilian psychiatrist Dr. Guido Palomba in an interview with the channel Cortes do Meirelles on Youtube in 09/18/2024.

In the video that follows, Dr. Thomas Armstrong provides a sociological interpretation of the disorder called ADHD pointing out that it has been established as a social construction, with a shift approach from psychoanalytic to biological psychiatry, depicted solely as a medical disorder with a biochemical basis.

American Barry Prizant, one of the biggest names in the study of the subject, also deconstructs mistaken notions about autism in his book “Uniquely Human” (Simon & Schuster, 2022). According to him, there are more misdiagnoses than ever before, when children with other neurodevelopmental conditions, such as language and learning difficulties, sensory processing disorders and ADHD, for example, receive a diagnosis of autism even though they do not meet all the criteria for the condition.

Approaches to people with the disorder cannot be “based on a diagnostic label or subcategory, but on a careful analysis of each person’s strengths and needs,” he says, since each person is a human being in their own way, each person is different from the other.

It is worth noting here that the use of complementary therapies has been practiced throughout the world, seeking to support specific emotional states or challenges that people suffering from these disorders have to face.

It is well known that stress and anxiety often produce or exacerbate physical symptoms in people with these diagnoses. Therefore, trying to minimize these symptoms can have a positive effect on the health-related quality of life of these people.

Among alternative and complementary therapies, the use of flower remedies has proven to be quite effective. Although there is limited scientific evidence specifically on the effectiveness of flower remedies in the treatment of ASD and ADHD, the experience of therapists working with clients has shown improvements, mainly in relation to emotional regulation, reduction of stress and anxiety, fear, frustration, mood swings, improvement in communication and social interaction, improvement in focus and concentration (and consequently in learning), among others.

The process of creating Bach Flower Remedies, also known as flower essences, involves capturing the energetic imprint of the flowers in water, usually through solar infusion or boiling. This essence is then preserved in brandy and diluted for use. It is believed that the resulting remedies carry the vibrational energy of the flowers, which can positively influence the body's energy field and emotional state. Most importantly, unlike commonly prescribed medications, they can be taken by people of any age, have no side effects, and are not addictive if used over the long term. They also do not interfere with use in conjunction with medications that may be prescribed by conventional medicine.

The Bach flower repertoire includes a total of 38 essences. The most commonly recommended by therapists for symptoms of autism and ADHD are the following:

✦ Clematis, for those who have their head in the clouds, daydreaming, lost in thought and distracted;
✦ Impatiens, for impatience, irritability and lack of cooperation;
✦ Larch, for lack of self-confidence, feelings of inferiority;
✦ Mimulus, for fears of known causes, shyness;
✦ Scleranthus, for indecision, hesitation, difficulty in making decisions;
✦ Vervain, for excessive enthusiasm, euphoria, exaggerated expressiveness;
✦ Walnut, for those who are overly sensitive to external influences, strongly influenced by the world around them (lights, sounds, people);
✦ Water Violet, for those who build a barrier between themselves and others and may feel lonely and unable to make contact with other people;
✦ White Chestnut, for lack of concentration and memory, as well as mental fatigue;
✦ Rescue, to combat fear, panic, shock and fear of losing control, working as an emergency remedy in events of anxiety or acute suffering.

In practice, the selection of flower essences is guided mainly by the individual's most evident temperament, personality traits and observations of their caregivers, in the case of minors. In children and adolescents, in particular, it is proposed that flower essences help them deal with daily challenges, such as fear, impatience, impulsiveness, loneliness, etc.

In this way, the choice of flower remedies is made on a case-by-case basis, as what applies to one may not apply to another. An additional flower remedy may even be indicated that does not fit into any of the situations listed above, aiming to address emotional and mental states that may be behind the most obvious symptoms.

If you, a loved one or friend of yours, experience any of these conditions, or have been reported with any of these disorders, opening to the experience with flower essences can bring surprising improvements. Furthermore, as explained on our page about the Maintenance Flower Remedy, flower essences are inexpensive, have no contraindications, are not harmful to health or addictive, and are not antagonistic to any other form of medical treatment, and can be used without problems by anyone. The Maintenance Flower Remedy is particularly powerful because acts on the innate aspects of the individual, their inner energies, minimizing the negative aspects of their personality and enhancing the positive aspects, ultimately aiming for balance.
